Thursday 21 January 2021: The Tribe Has Spoken
So, that’s it for the Trump presidency. Officially,
at least. We may well be in for another year of Donald leching around
the White House while he insists the votes haven’t been counted
correctly. They have been counted, and perhaps that’s his issue. We may
never know; he’s dead as far as the public consciousness goes. We can
sometimes hear his voice.
In the last 48 hours alone, he has succeeded in
building his wall – although not the world-saving border wall he had
promised, just a himself-saving wall around the White House to barricade
himself in. Along with frequent claims of election fraud and the threat
that he may not peacefully leave the position, he has claimed to be
victorious and seems unaware that his reality is … not. One wonders the
mind of a man (and a President, no less) that would openly and without
fear of consequence attack the democratic processes in the US in public
forum. He’s not technically wrong – he just isn’t supposed to be the
party undermining the result of an election; especially when he’s
losing. And even so, there are likely more tactful ways to achieve these
reforms. For example, shitting on George Washington’s grave.
To piggyback on an earlier point, the man’s mind
must at least be thinking that the system is rigged against him. This
offers insight into his worldview and a partial justification of his
actions – he obviously believes that all systems in the US are built to
serve him and that failure of these systems to do so is a failure of
these systems. Perhaps this would explain the unwillingness to leave
office. It would mean admitting he isn’t the man he thinks he is (he’s
not).
Perhaps it’s best to leave Donald Trump, as we found him – or perhaps even as he is showing the world that he wishes to be left – alone, in denial and holding press conferences in the parking lots of firms that sounds similar to hotels. Leave him to his fantasies of grandeur in fancy towers where debt doesn’t exist and wearing a suit makes you smart. Leave him in his made-up world where he’s King of the USA – so that he can build a wall around it and keep himself safe from the truths that haunt his shadow. Or be forcefully dragged out of it by his own secret services, either is fine by me. Of one thing, I am certain; we are better than this tomfoolery and no matter what a Biden presidency may bring, or may indeed not quite deliver on, at least in the long run there will hopefully be less abject stupidity. Or at least that it will be consigned to reality TV where it belongs.
